Mole Removal

Published on: July 26, 2018

A mole is a coloured growth, on the skin that develops when pigment cells (melanocytes) grow in clusters. Although most of us have moles, not all of us are okay with them. If you have a mole that’s in a very obvious place, is large, or causes restriction in your movement, then it can play on your mind quite a lot. But it doesn’t have to.

At The London Cosmetic Clinic, we have specialist cosmetic doctors who can remove the mole from your skin easily and quickly.

Before the Procedure

Before we go ahead and remove the mole, you’ll have a medical consultation with a specialist doctor. They’ll will assess your mole and discuss it with you, making sure it hasn’t changed colour or size recently. They’ll make sure the mole can be removed safely and will begin planning your procedure. Simple!

The Procedure

Before you have the mole removed, you’ll be given a local anaesthetic, just to make sure it is painless. There are then three different ways in which your mole may be removed, depending on the most appropriate option for you:

Shave Excision – Moles that protrude from the skin can simply be shaved away under local anaesthetic. A scalpel is used to shave the mole allowing it to be flush with the surrounding skin. It’s a quick treatment, taking about 10 minutes in total. The tiny superficial wound left will take between 1 and 2 weeks to heal and doesn’t need stitches.

Elliptical Excision – If the mole needs a deeper incision to be completely removed, it can be excised. This wound will require stitches, which can either be dissolvable or non-dissolvable. This treatment will take up to half an hour.

Hyfrecator Treatment – For super quick removal, if circumstances allow, we can use the Hyfrecator. This is when an apparatus using the low-power of electro-surgery which destroys the mole tissue. A small superficial wound will be left behind, but it won’t take too long to heal.

After the Procedure

Once we’ve removed your mole, you can get back to your day to day activities. We’ll dress the wound for you if it needs it, and give you an antibiotic cream to make sure it heals nicely. If you had stitches, we’ll remove them in 1-2 weeks after the procedure. We do our utmost to minimise scarring and the use of a high SPF for 6 months after the procedure will also reduce the chance of scarring.

Histology

We send off most of the moles we remove to a laboratory for a histology test, which looks for any abnormal cells under a very powerful microscope. We do this as standard practice to provide the best and most responsible care for all our patients. Usually there isn’t a problem, but we like to be certain!
