The masseter is the thick chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw. When it is overdeveloped — from genetics, chewing habits or night-time clenching — the lower face reads as wide or square. Non-surgical jaw reduction with botulinum toxin is one of the most requested lower-face treatments we deliver in London.
It is also one of the easiest to do badly. Too much toxin, the wrong depth, or treating bone width as if it were muscle, and the face looks weak instead of refined.
Muscle vs bone vs fat
Stand in front of a mirror and clench. If a firm bulge appears at the jaw angle, muscle is part of the width. If the width is unchanged on clenching, you may be looking at bone or fat — and toxin will disappoint.
A doctor should also look at the chin, the neck and the buccal area. Slimming the masseter without supporting a weak chin can unbalance the profile. That is when chin enhancement or jawline contouring enters the plan.
Jaw slimming vs bruxism
The same injection can serve two goals:
- Aesthetics — a softer, narrower lower face
- Function — less clenching force, fewer morning headaches for some patients, less muscle bulk from grinding
These goals use similar anatomy but not always the same dose or follow-up. Tell us whether you break night guards, crack teeth or wake with jaw pain. We also treat chronic migraine with toxin in appropriate patients; that is a different protocol.
Week-by-week: what results look like
Days 1–7: little visible change. Chewing very tough food may feel different first. Weeks 2–6: bulk begins to soften. Faces photograph slimmer before clothing-size logic expects it. Months 3–5: peak slimming for many patients. After that: gradual return. Maintenance is planned, not improvised.
The “over-slimmed” look
If both masseters are flattened and the smile or cheek support is weak, the face can look gaunt or aged. We would rather leave a little strength in the muscle than chase a V-shape that does not match your skull.
Asymmetry is common — one side often works harder. Doses should follow the muscle you have, not a screenshot from social media.
Chewing, gym and the sagging myth
You should still eat a normal diet. We advise care with very chewy food in the first fortnight. Masseter toxin does not make the face “melt” if doses are medical and the rest of the lower face is assessed. Laxity that appears after slimming was often already there, unmasked when bulk disappeared. That is a planning issue, not a reason to fear the treatment in the right candidate.
Men and women
Many men want less pain from grinding without a feminine, narrow jaw. Many women want width reduction without losing definition. The injection is the same family of treatment; the aesthetic brief is not. Say what you want the face to do in a suit or on camera.
We use doctor-prescribed toxin, including Alluzience where appropriate, in a CQC-regulated Harley Street setting.
FAQs
Does masseter Botox hurt?
Brief pinpricks. Most patients rate it as easy compared with dental work.
Will my smile change?
It should not, if placement is accurate. A changed smile is a reason to choose an experienced injector.
How often do I need it?
Often two to three times in the first year, then sometimes less often as the muscle deconditions.
Can it help TMJ?
It can reduce muscle-driven symptoms in selected patients. It is not a stand-alone treatment for every temporomandibular joint problem. We will not over-claim.
Can I have this with a non-surgical facelift plan?
Yes, often. Masseter relaxation changes how jowls and jawline treatments are designed.
Refine the jaw with a medical plan
If you clench, if your lower face has widened, or if you are unsure whether the issue is muscle at all, book an assessment rather than buying “jaw Botox” as a commodity. Book a consultation
