If you place your hands at the angle of your jaw as you clench your teeth down, you will feel the bulging and hardness of a muscle. This muscle, called masseter muscle, is often a primary cause of the excessive jaw width and teeth grinding. Botulinum toxin injections weakens the corner part of the muscle, hence improve teeth grinding. The injection can also significantly reduce the size of this muscle and narrow the lower part of the face, therefore it is also commonly called the ”Botuilinum toxin V shape treatment”. An additional benefit from the side profile is that the cheeks become highlighted, adding definition and contour to the face.

What is Botulinum toxin ?
Botulinum toxin, is a protein produced by the the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It relaxes muscle by temporary block nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles.
The cosmetic effect of Botulinum toxin was first documented as early as 1989 and was approved by the FDA in 2002. It is now regular used by many, both male and female, as it is less intrusive and less artificial in appearance, than traditional form of treament such as plastic surgery.
How does Botulinum toxin injection reduce the size of my jaw?
Botulinum toxin weakens the injected muscle over the time, which leads in turn to a reduction in the overall size. Our specialist doctor will focuses the treatment precisely where the three heads of the muscle overlap (for maximal effect) and at the deep and superficial part of the muscle, which happens to correspond with where the muscle inserts into the bone. By reducing the muscle at the point of attachment to the bone, the bone can also reduce over time giving longer-lasting results without compromise to the strength of the bone. The aesthetic effect of reducing the flared nature of the jawline is only truly appreciated in the right candidate. Your experienced doctor will personally evaluate your face before deciding if you are suitable to have this treatment.
What does the procedure involve ?
Prior the treatment :
The doctor will review your medical history to ensure you are suitable for the treatment, medically examine the jaw muscle to determine the injection sites and explain the procedure, after care, all possible complications and how to avoid prior the treatment
The treatment :
There is only one to two injections of Botulinum toxin per side of the jaw required during the procedure
Post treatment care :
Patients must not rub or massage the treated area for 4 hours after the injection in order to prevent spreading of the medication. Specific after care instructions will be provided during your visit by our Clinic Coordinator
Who is an appropriate candidate to have this procedure done?
Will I have problems chewing my food?
Most patients do not have this problem as only corner part of the muscle will be relaxed, not all parts of the muscle. However, you may experience some tiring after chewing for a while, this phenomenon is only temporary and will go away in a short period of time, commonly within a week.
Does the procedure hurt?
The procedure is painless. The specialist doctor has a specialized method of injection that virtually eliminates all discomfort without the need for an anaesthetic
What is the recovery like?
There really is no recovery period and significant swelling or bruising. The treatment takes only five minutes as an office procedure and you may drive home thereafter. There really are no restrictions in your activity post procedure
When will I see the results and how long will it last?
Generally, it will take about 6 weeks before you see the difference and will last typically between 6 months to a year and a half. However, at the end of the first week, you may notice that your jawline feels a lot softer when you bite down and feel it. It is recommended to evaluate the result at 3 months following the first injection in order to evaluate the full effect and see if you need the further treatment. You may need up to 3 treatments in total to achieve maximum result depending upon your jaw muscle size. Top up treatments every 6-12 moths are recommended to maintain the result. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you. Our treatment provides a long-lasting but not permanent result leaving you the option of refining your treatment in tune with changing taste and fashion
When will I get the results for excessive teeth grinding?
The result for teeth grinding can be experienced within 1-2 weeks. Regular treatment every 4-6 months will generally provide longer lasting and more effective results as the muscle will become smaller and less active
