Dos and don’ts with PDO thread lifting

Published on: August 18, 2021

PDO thread-lifting is one of the most effective cosmetic treatments to lift, tone, tighten and restore the facial features which may have been affected by the natural ageing process. The treatment involves placing surgical sutures and into specific areas of the face at a particular depth, then using a tightening action to physically lift up the skin. Results can be seen instantly as well as improvements continuing over time due to the subsequent production of collagen within the skin following treatment. There is no general anaesthetic, no cutting of the skin, no stitches and far less downtime than a traditional surgical facelift.

At The London Cosmetic Clinic in Harley Street, we use Mint PDO threads which are FDA-approved and offer superb results safely and quickly (no waiting months to see a result, as with some PDO threads). Suppose you are thinking about having a PDO thread eye lift, facelift or neck lift. In that case, there are certain considerations that you will need to take into account, from the practitioner who is performing your PDO thread lifts to the quality of the product used. We have put together some do’s and don’ts to ensure that you choose wisely and receive a safe and effective treatment and achieve amazing results that can last up to 18 months.

Do – ensure you choose a medically qualified practitioner who specialises in PDO threads.

PDO threads should only be administered by a medical professional, such as a doctor, surgeon, dentist or nurse, and who has been specifically trained in thread lifting techniques. In the hands of someone who does not understand the facial anatomy or how to cope with any side-effects or unforeseen circumstances that might arise during or after a particular procedure, PDO threads could cause some serious facial and health issues.

PDO threads need to be inserted at very specific depths of the skin and avoiding critical facial ligaments, vessels and veins; only a medic who has spent years studying the intricacies of the face and subsequent intensive training on how to insert the threads can help avoid unwanted side-effects. If you are unsure if a practitioner holds a medical qualification or is CQC and GMC registered, simply ask to view their certification (this should be clearly displayed in the clinic but can also be emailed to you prior to a clinic visit).

Don’t – choose the cheapest option.

It’s tempting, especially after the year we have had, to cut corners when it comes to cost for cosmetic treatments. Many of us don’t think ourselves worthy of spending upwards of £2000 on facial treatment, and the lure of website discount offers or taking someone up on a ‘training’ price might save us a few pounds. In the long run, we could find ourselves seeking further treatment after one of these cheap options to repair, reconstruct or remove threads that have been poorly administered. With any non-surgical treatment, we must value ourselves and think carefully about what could go wrong if we take that ‘too good to be true’ offer.

We could end up not only paying twice but paying with our looks and our health too. At The London Cosmetic Clinic, we are always seeking to offer value for money to our patients, but will not compromise on safety, quality or performance.

We occasionally have an offer for PDO threads at our Harley Street clinic, but you can rest assured that our treatments will always be performed in a medically regulated environment by a properly trained and medically qualified practitioner. Accept no imitations when it comes to your precious face, your general health and your wellbeing.

Do – undergo a pre-treatment consultation.

Here at The London Cosmetic Clinic, we would never offer a non-surgical or surgical treatment without asking you to attend a pre-treatment consultation first. This meeting is vital for your practitioner to get to know you, your unique requirements and facial concerns, and check your medical history to ensure you are fit and suitable for the procedure.

It might be that you believe you need a specific treatment to solve a particular issue. However, it might be that what you think you need may not be that, and our practitioners might suggest an alternative, or even combination treatments, to ensure you obtain the best results.

We will always offer you impartial advice and allow you time to consider all the options open to you, to make an informed and educated decision on how you would like to proceed. We will let you know if you would need to take any time off work to recover after your procedure, so you can make your plans well in advance, to ensure a restful recovery without stress or inconvenience. Once we have offered you all the information you need and if you are then happy to proceed, you can book your appointment for your treatment in plenty of time to prepare for the day, as well as any recovery time afterwards.

Don’t – be pressured to have a PDO thread treatment on the day of your consultation.

By law and as part of their duty of care, medical professionals must offer a cooling-off period to any patient enquiring about a specific treatment to go away and think about the treatment and whether they would like to go ahead with it.

If a practitioner makes you feel pressured to have the treatment straight after your consultation, best make your excuses and leave. Although PDO threads are quick to administer, it is not a procedure that should be taken lightly.

It’s your right as a patient to be able to take time to consider your options and to think about whether a thread lift is the right treatment for you. You may want to discuss your treatment with a spouse or partner, you may decide you’d like to do more research online, or you might not have time that day. If your doctor respects that you may need a little time to think about your PDO thread treatment and suggests that you make an appointment when you feel comfortable to do so, you’re on the right track.

Do – ensure that there is a suitable aftercare programme in place.

A professional, reputable and caring team of medical professionals will always follow up on any non-surgical injectable treatment administered by one of their practitioners. The doctor or the reception team will have, as standard, a call back procedure. In cases of PDO thread treatments, we will call you the day after and a few days following your procedure (especially if it’s your first) and request that you attend a second appointment for any adjustments or extra treatment you may require.

We will also offer you a number to call anytime, should you feel worried or concerned about any unforeseen or unexpected after-effects from the treatment. Ensuring any clinic that you attend for a PDO thread lift has a permanent address with a team of staff will ensure that you will always be able to get in touch with them and have someone to talk with if you have any concerns following your treatment.

‘Pop-up’ clinics and ‘temporary’ treatment rooms will not offer this service, so avoid them, as the last thing you want is to be concerned about a particular reaction or response and be met with no help or assistance. This takes us back to the cost implication. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for, so make sure prices are fair but not silly and that you know you can reach the clinic with ease, after your treatment.

Don’t – dictate or insist on what you want to your cosmetic doctor.

All good doctors are well-trained to advise on the best route to take with any non-surgical treatment and have a duty of care to do no harm. In plain terms, this means that by law, they have to do their utmost not to cause you injury or achieve a result that is not natural-looking for your facial appearance. A medical practitioner will know which PDO thread products are the very best use and where on your face ( and how deep) to insert them. They will always advise you how the procedure will feel, both during and afterwards and how you will look post-treatment.

It’s fair to say that we all want things that we see around us, and you may have seen a friend who has had a PDO thread lift performed in a certain way, and they may tell you that this is the best way to have the procedure. However, this doesn’t mean that YOU will get the same results with that specific treatment protocol. Your face is unique to you, and any good facial cosmetic doctor will dictate how the treatment will take place.

So, don’t be offended if your doctor declines if you ask something specific which they don’t believe will benefit you. If you have done your research and know that our practitioner is well-versed and highly qualified, trust their advice and let them guide and advise you.
