The main causes are the movement of the muscles in your lips and around your mouth when you talk, smile, smoke or kiss can cause creases on your skin and over a long period of time these may become permanent. Lines and wrinkles can even be caused even when the underlying muscle are still. This happens because the aging process reduces the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin. Sun can also degrade your skin so much that it loses it’s ability to snap back in to place. Ageing also causes the sagging of your cheeks, consequently, creating nose to mouth folds, marionette lines and drooping mouth corners.
Dermal filler injections: The treatment involves the injection of filler to plump up and fill the lines or folds. This treatment is very effective for static lines and folds around the lips, cheeks, nose to mouth folds, marionette lines and mouth corner lifting
Botulinum toxin injections: This can reduce the movement of the muscles around the lip which causes smoking lines and the muscle that excessively pulls the mouth corner downward. Therefore, it helps improve smoker lines and a drooping mouth corner
During your medical consultation, the specialist doctor will carefully examine and advise you the best treatment options for you individually.
Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It relaxes muscles by temporarily blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles. The cosmetic effect of Botulinum toxin was first documented as early as 1989 and was approved by the FDA in 2002. It is now regularly used by many, both male and female, as it is less intrusive and less artificial in appearance than the traditional form of treament such as plastic surgery
Dermal fillers are materials that are frequently used to correct scarring, lines, folds and other depressions in the skin. They are a kind of soft tissue designed to be injected into the skin for purposes of improving the appearance. Generally, they are made of several types of materials of synthetic, man-made and natural categories. They have been developed into various standards depending on the level of usage.
The most common dermal filler used is a temporary filler called Hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is one of nature’s most versatile and fascinating substances. It is found throughout the body as well as in most other living organisms. It has many functions, from giving the skin elasticity and providing our skin with volume, giving it a youthful appearance. Dermal fillers consist of sterile gels consisting of non-animal, cross-linked, hyaluronic acid (HA) that are made in a laboratory. They contain no human or animal DNA and have the best safety profile of all the fillers currently on the market as it is the only type of filler that is reversible. These products are FDA approved for use in the nasolabial folds and are used “off-label” in other areas
Topical anaesthetic will be applied for 15-30 minutes prior the treatment for additional comfort
The dermal filler is injected in precise locations into the skin. The doctor will then massage to smooth the product. During the procedure, you are fully awake and will be given a mirror to hold to enable you to see the results
You should avoid touching or applying make up on the treated area for 6 hours in order to prevent infection. The results are immediate and last from 6-12 months. As the results are relatively temporary, adjustments can be made as your face changes over time to ensure you always retain a natural look. Specific post treatment instructions will be given during your visit by our Clinic Coordinator
A full medical consultation with the doctor will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the treatment. The doctor may examine your ability to move certain muscles to determine location, size and use of the muscles that create your wrinkles. Then, the treatment goal will be discussed and finalised and a customised treatment plan will be created for you
No anaesthesia is required. However, the doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anaesthetic cream. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. A few tiny injections of Botox will be administered directly into the muscles that causes the lines. The treatment will take approximately 15 minutes to complete
Avoid touching, rubbing or applying make up on the treated areas for 4 hours. Excessive exercise should also be avoided for 24 hours post treatment. The procedure will take around 15 minutes to complete. Specific after care instructions will be given to you on the day of your treatment by our Clinic Coordinator
Only you and your doctor can decide if the treatment is right for you and your concerns. During your medical consultation, our expert cosmetic doctor will asses your medical history and make sure you are suitable for the treatment.
Ensure to tell the doctor about all of your medical conditions, including:
Do not use if you are pregnant or breast feeding
Botulinum toxin: Injection related side effects are minimal and temporary such as redness, swelling and bruising. Spreading of the Botox to the muscles nearby can be easily prevented by avoiding rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 4 hours
Dermal filler: After the treatment(s) some common injection-related reactions might occur, such as swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the injection site. These typically resolve spontaneously within 2 to 10 days. Mild bruising or a slight blush might appear at the injection site immediately following treatment and may last for 2-10 days.
If you’ve previously had cold sores around the mouth (facial herpes simplex), the treatment might provoke an outbreak. Be sure you have a supply of the oral tablets (prescription) such as acyclovir or topical cream such as Zovirax.
To avoid swelling and bruising, you should:
The Botulinum toxin results generally last 4-6 months whereas the dermal filler results last 6-12 months.
