How to treat acne scarring with Morpheus 8

Published on: February 16, 2021

Acne scars are the bitter reminder of the skin condition which can occur during puberty and extend into adulthood. If you suffer from acne scarring, you’ll know that they won’t just disappear or fade over time. In recent years, medical microneedling has become one of the most popular and effective, non-surgical solutions for reducing or even getting rid of many types of resilient acne scars, including ice pick, boxcar and keloid scarring. At The London Cosmetic Clinic in Harley Street, we offer the industry-leading Morpheus8™ device, by InMode® to harness the efficacy of microneedling and combine this innovative method with the healing powers of radiofrequency (RF) energy.

What causes acne scars?

Acne scars are formed as a result of a compromised skin healing process and inflammation, caused by teenage or adult acne.

During the wound healing process, cells regenerate and build up new skin and connective tissues. One such connective tissue, vital for restoring your skin’s integrity is collagen. However, as collagen production can ‘lag’ during the healing process following acne, you can develop sunken (atrophic) scars. These are commonly known as boxcar, ice pick and rolling scars. In other cases, the skin cells will mistakenly produce and an excess amount of collagen, leading to elevated scars known as hypertrophic scars.

If the scar becomes larger and more pronounced than the original scar, this is known as keloid scarring, something that can be tricky to treat and needs careful monitoring by a medically-qualified skin expert.

How does Morpheus8 treat acne scars?

Morpheus8 is an advanced radiofrequency (RF), fractional medical microneedling treatment that helps re-model and smooth damaged and uneven skin. During the treatment, your medical practitioner will move the patented handpiece over the targeted area of skin. The Morpheus8 device will penetrate the skin and create subdermal micro-wounds. Whilst this action takes place, waves of RF energy are sent out from the handpiece to enhance the healing process. This combined technology triggers a series of naturally-occurring healing actions; the same kind of healing processes take place any time you experience a wound to your skin. Cells are regenerated quickly and begin to form new tissues – including collagen.

With a course of treatments, recommended to you in a pre-treatment consultation, here at The London Cosmetic Clinic, Harley Street, you will see a reduction of scar appearance, even the complete and permanent removal of such scars.

What does a Morpheus8 acne scar treatment feel like?

Before the treatment, you will recieve some topical anaesthetic cream to numb the area.. This should ease any discomfort. However, you may still be able to feel a warm, prickling sensation, which can last several hours after your treatment: due to the RF heat energy warming the deeper layers of the skin. It’s totally normal to experience these sensations, and they should not be painful.

Is there any downtime after a Morpheus8 acne scar treatment?

You may experience some minor redness and inflammation which can last around three days, following your Morpheus8 acne scar treatment. This is why many of our patients have their treatment on a Thursday or Friday so they can heal over the weekend and return to work on Monday, feeling refreshed and looking energised. It’s important to consider that there is no ‘clinical’ downtime with Morpheus8, so you do not need to spend time at home recovering or resting. You will have some cosmetic downtime, so you may wish to avoid any social events around the time of your treatment.

Am I suitable for a Morpheus8 acne scar treatment at The London Cosmetic Clinic?

Most people who are experiencing mild to severe acne scars can benefit from Morpheus8. However, we will always ask that you attend a no-obligation consultation, before your treatment to examine your skin, check your medical history and advise you on how many treatments we feel will be suitable for your specific skin concerns. Once we are happy that Morpheus8 will be both safe and effective, you can go ahead and book your first treatment.

What are the contraindications to a Morpheus8 acne scar treatment?

Contraindications to Morpheus8 acne scar treatment include:-

  • Keloid scars – some patients with excessive, chronic keloid scarring may not be able to have the treatment, and your practitioner will need to discuss this with you at your pre-treatment consultation.
  • A history of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions;
  • A history of actinic (solar) keratosis;
  • A history of Herpes Simplex infections
  • A history of haemophilia
  • A history of diabetes
  • The presence of raised moles
  • Warts on the treatment area.

How many treatments will I need with Morpheus8?

For minor acne scarring, your practitioner here at The London Cosmetic Clinic may recommend 1 to 2 treatment sessions with Morpheus8. For moderate to severe acne scarring, a course of up to 4 treatments may be required, at least a month apart – giving your skin time to heal between treatments. Your clinicial will devise a plan for you in your pre-treatment skin assessment and consultation.

Are the results permanent?

As Morpheus8 stimulates the production of new collagen with the skin, the results are permanent. The scars will be visibly improved, and in the months after your course of treatment, your skin will become smoother, softer and more evenly toned.

Acne scars no longer have to be a permanent reminder of this troublesome and sometimes emotionally-upsetting skin condition. With Morpheus8 and our skilled practitioners here at The London Cosmetic Clinic, we can make your acne scars a thing of the past, for good.
