Is Coolsculpting safe? Expert answers to all your fat freezing questions

Published on: June 17, 2022

Most of us, if not all, seek body perfection. We want that perfect figure that boosts our confidence when we adorn it with clothing or even when it’s naked. Looking at yourself in the mirror and being content that you need no one to convince you that you are perfect just the way you are; yeah right!

Removing excess fat is one of the ways people fight for their body confidence. For this, people go to any length to make sure of it. There are different actions and procedures people take to remove excess fat; these range from one or a combination of dieting, exercise, liposuction, or cool sculpting.

Coolsculpting is an FDA approved  non surgical procedure that helps you reduce excess fat in targeted areas.

In this article, Doctor Salinda Johnson of The London Cosmetic Clinic will be answering all your questions on Coolsculpting which includes; what coolsculpting is, how it works, what to taking into consideration before deciding on cool sculpting, risks,  as well as the potential  side effects.

What is coolsculpting?

Coolsculpting, also known as cryolipolysis is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure for reducing fats in the body. It helps you get rid of those frustrating fats that have been refusing to go away no matter how hard you exercise or diet. The cool thing about coolsculpting is the fact that it’s a good alternative to invasive procedures such liposuction.

Coolsculpting using a cold temperature to freeze the stubborn fats, break them down to be eventually disposed of through your kidney. That is why you may experience slight diarrhea after the treatment, the destroyed fats cells have to be passed out as feces.   This fat freezing method is considered safe due to the fact that it does not involve cutting into the skin, tissue manipulation or administration of anaesthesia. And the instruments used do no harm to the skin, but targets fat directly. It doesn’t require any down time. You can move on with your daily activity almost immediately.

Procedures for coolsculpting

The coolsculpting procedure is handled by a certified cosmetic surgeon who  employs the use of a handheld device that has an applicator that resembles the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner to target the unwanted fats. A  gel would be applied on the area where fat is about to be removed. The applicator will be directed towards the target area to cool the targeted fat cells. The device will be carefully moved around your targeted skin to administer suction and cooling effects.

The procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes depending on the target area. By the time they finish, some deep tissues might have frozen in the process of freezing the data. Your body will massaged immediately to break down these frozen tissues and also help your body absorb the broken down fat cells. Overall the procedure is  less painful. However it depends on your pain threshold. Slight feeling of pinching and pulling during the process is the common form of discomfort you may feel.

Does coolsculpting work on belly fat?

It depends on the type of fat in your stomach. Coolsculpting can get rid of your belly fat if  it’s subcutaneous fat. Coolsculpting can not get rid of visceral fat. Subcutaneous fats that are just below the surface of your skin. They are soft fats that can be felt with your hand if you pinch your stomach. As for visceral fats, they are fats that are deeply attached to your organs. They are hard to remove. You can only get rid of them with procedures like liposuction. Aside from the type of fat, Coolsculpting can not get rid of your belly  fat higher its more than 3 inches.

 Parts of the body where coolsculpting can work aside from the belly include;

  • Arms
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Underneath the buttocks
  • Love handles
  • Chin area
  • Bra and back fat

Is coolsculpting permanent?

Your coolsculpting results can be perfectly permanent, yes!  Coolsculpting is a permanent fat reduction technology if you align your eating habit and lifestyle towards the goal of losing the fats permanently. Even if you gain weight in the future , fats would not grow in those areas you treated with coolsculpting because the fat cells there were destroyed.

Does coolsculpting damage the skin?

Coolsculpting targets fat and not the skin. A 2015 review asserts that coolsculpting does not pose any kind of danger to the skin and the body generally.

As long as you get your procedure done by experts with a proven track record of success such as the London Cosmetic Clinic, you shouldn’t worry about skin damage.

However, you shouldn’t undergo coolsculpting if you have any underlying condition that may make you reactive to cold temperature such as Raynaud’s disease.

Coolsculpting side effects

Coolsculpting has been confirmed by FDA to be a safe and efficient way of getting rid of fats from the body. However, some minimal side effects may be experienced during and after the procedure.

During the procedure, patients may experience;

  • Aching
  • Pulling
  • Cramping
  • Tingling
  • Stinging
  • Feeling of intense cold

These feelings are quite normal and should subside after the treatment area is numb.  The after effects that may be experienced include;

  • Tenderness
  • Aching
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Cramping
  • Skin reactions

These minor effects are supposed to be temporary and should not last more than a few weeks after which you must have been seeing noticeable results.

Are there long term side effects of coolsculpting?

Coolsculpting as a non-invasive procedure of getting rid of fat does not have long term effects such as other methods. Most patients who choose coolsculpting resume their normal daily routines immediately after going through the procedure. All the side effects that may occur are expected to be minimal enough not to weigh you down and are to disappear in about a week or two.

Is coolsculpting safe for seniors?

Coolsculpting is interestingly a procedure that is safe for almost all ages. As long as you don’t have any cold-induced condition or any other underlying disease that may get you to react badly to the procedure.

Coolsculpting reviews

An up-to-date review site confirms coolsculpting to be 80 percent effective. However, treatment results do vary. Few coolsculpting negative reviews from people are more of the side effects that are supposed to be for just a few weeks, extending to a month or two. Or not being content with the results when compared to other procedures.

Final words

Coolsculpting is one of the non-invasive effective ways to lose fat in the body. The results or reviews from other people may trigger you to do yours. However you should discuss any kind of procedure you want to choose for fat burning with your doctor. This is to know which is suitable for your body, and also to understand the effects and risks attached to these procedures, which usually vary according to body type or health conditions.

If you are looking for the answer to “is coolsculpting safe?” then you should not judge from reviews or mere hearsays. The best thing to do is to visit your doctor to know if it is really safe for you.
