How do tear trough fillers work?
Published on: September 19, 2021
Dermal fillers are one of the most popular non-surgical, anti-ageing treatments around. Hugely popular amongst the younger generation for plumping and augmenting the lips, dermal fillers can be wrongly underestimated due to the popularity of this particular phenomenon. Fillers are hugely versatile and not only for enhancing the lip area.
For patients experiencing the natural signs of ageing, such as under-eye bags and dark circles, dermal fillers for this area (tear troughs) can offer rejuvenating and youth-enhancing properties.
At The London Cosmetic Clinic in Harley Street, one of the foremost destinations in the UK for cosmetic surgery, we offer dermal fillers for a whole host of anti-ageing treatments. However, we are noticing that more and more of our London patients ask for dermal fillers under the eyes, as the procedure is quick to administer, with very little to no downtime, virtually pain-free, and results can last up to 18 months!
How do tear trough fillers work?
To discover how tear trough fillers work, we first must look at dermal fillers and what they contain. Dermal fillers are injectable gel-like substances that come in various thicknesses (viscosities).
Very fluid dermal fillers can be used in the delicate areas of the face and all over skin-boosting treatments. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA) as their main component. HA is a sugar found within the body, in the eyes, connective tissues, the joints, and the skin. However, roughly half of the HA in your body is found within your skin, where it binds with water to maintain healthy moisture levels.
As we age, or as a result of UV rays, smoking and both internal and external pollution, HA decreases over time. As HA helps the formation of collagen within the skin, its depletion causes dehydration of the skin cells. This means that collagen production slows, and both substances are greatly reduced, leading to skin ageing, sagging and wrinkling. It could be argued that you could not see the ageing process more as than around the eyes.
As the skin becomes less elastic, it hangs down and forms under-eye bags. The loss of bone mass in the orbital area means that the eyes can become hollow and dark circles can appear. Injecting the crease under an eye bag (tear trough) can help to lift the skin, fill the crevice, lift and lighten dark circles and give a smoother, more wide-awake appearance.
Am I suitable for a tear trough dermal filler treatment at The London Cosmetic Clinic?
If you are experiencing under-eye bags and dark circles that the natural ageing process has caused, you will most likely be a suitable candidate for dermal fillers. However, as with all injectable treatments, there can be contraindications that can prevent or restrict a procedure from going ahead. Therefore, before we can decide on whether dermal fillers will be suitable and safe for you, we will ask that you attend a no-obligation consultation with one of our medical professionals here at our London clinic. This initial meeting is vital to discuss your requirements and facial concerns, check your medical history and examine your face, so we can decide whether dermal fillers will be a suitable choice. Once we have agreed that a tear trough filler treatment will offer you the very best results, we can book you in for your first treatment.
What happens during a tear trough filler treatment at The London Cosmetic Clinic?
After completing some standard consent forms, you will be made comfortable in one of our treatment rooms. Some topical anaesthetic may be applied to the areas of injection. Following this, your practitioner will gently inject a small amount of very fluid HA filler into the areas under the eyes which need plumping and lifting.
The treatment will take no longer than 30 minutes and should not be painful, though it’s worth considering that as the skin under the eyes is super-thin, there may be some slight swelling and bruising around the area for a day or so after the treatment.
Your practitioner will give you some aftercare tips to follow, but it’s important to be gentle in this area, avoid makeup for 24 hours, as well as stay clear of hot saunas, baths and steam rooms, excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption the night before and after your treatment and to allow around a week for the optimum results to be seen (though you will see an immediate improvement in this area).
The ageing process doesn’t have to be something we just put up with. Dermal fillers for the tear trough area can offer beautifully natural results, giving you back your confidence and helping you to look more youthful and wide-awake for up to 18 months at a time!
